Maqbool Fida Husain, India’s most famous modern painter, has died in London. He was 95.
Sadly, Husain had lived in self-imposed exile in Dubai, London and Qatar since 2005, after coming under attack from ignorant bigots in India for a nude painting of a woman shaped like India’s map, and other paintings of naked Hindu Goddesses.
Husain was a former movie billboard artist who rose to become India’s most sought-after painter, whose work commanded price tags running into millions of dollars. His paintings and even his simple pencil sketches became status symbols for India’s wealthy elite.
Not to many people would call him an “illustrator” but I think his work, his colors and his vision, and the man himself warrants more than a mention on anything connected to art.
Our loss Husain saheb.
